But what is an HBSc degree? While they may sound like something out of a sci-fi movie, the biomedical sciences are a very real set of sciences that study the body’s natural processes to develop treatments and cures for diseases. HBSc courses cover everything from human anatomy and physiology to health psychology, making graduates qualified for careers across the healthcare spectrum. Biomedical sciences professionals frequently come across situations that require problem solving. Examples include creating a new experimentation strategy if a sample gets contaminated or coming up with an entirely new experiment if the first one fails.

In most scientific professions, statistical data analysis skills are needed to interpret data, find patterns, and establish conclusions from surveys and other sources. They can also help you predict future outcomes by looking at past data, particularly while executing and evaluating experiments.

Project management skills are essential for workplace success. In the scientific and medical fields, they’re especially important for allocating resources, completing research within budget, and effectively managing your time when you have multiple experiments on the go.

The biomedical sciences need strong researchers who ask provocative questions, have a keen eye for detail, and present findings in a compelling, informative way. A willingness to follow directions is also important, as most research needs to be completed in accordance with government and regulatory guidelines.

Much of what’s accomplished in the workplace is a team effort. By collaborating with your classmates on group projects, you’ll master communication, delegation, and conflict resolution. In the workplace, this will help your team members work to the best of their ability without experiencing burnout.

Career opportunities in the biomedical sciences are seemingly unlimited. According to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), there will be around 1.4 million health-related and natural and applied science jobs in 2028. Out of those, here are some to consider:

Biomedical scientists conduct research and tests to better diagnose, treat, and prevent disease. With the ability to uncover revolutionary insights into cancer biology, neuroscience, infectious diseases, genetics, and other areas, they’re undoubtedly prominent leaders in modern healthcare.

If you’re looking for an administrative role, clinical research associates act as liaisons between research sponsors and clinical trial facilitators. They also uphold the safety and ethics of clinical trials by ensuring that contracts are signed, regulations and protocols are followed, and data is properly collected.

Forensic scientists use their knowledge, particularly in chemistry and biology, to analyze physical evidence at a crime scene. They’re often called upon to testify about their findings in court, making them key instruments of criminal justice.

Toxicologists examine chemicals and other substances to determine their toxicity to humans, animals, and the environment. This information is used by regulatory agencies and other decision-makers to prevent or limit exposure. Pesticides, food additives, and industrial chemicals are just a few of the substances that toxicologists work with.
