What is career advising?

Career advising is an appointment service offered to all students at the University of Niagara Falls Canada. A Career Advisor can assist by providing guidance, resources, and supports intended to help students understand how their strengths, interests, and values may be applied to various career options.

By meeting with our Career Advisor, students will have the opportunity to discuss their career questions and goals, while gaining professional knowledge and skills to support their job search.

Career advising appointments are booked for 45 minutes and are available in-person or online. Select services may also be offered through email. View the various appointment types below to learn more about the assistance available.

How to book an appointment

Step One

Students should review appointment types and select the service they need. If interested in multiple services, they may rebook after the first appointment.

Step Two

Appointments can be requested by email. Once a request is received, an intake form will be sent to the student to be completed.

Step Three

After the intake form has been filled out and returned, the Career Advisor will book an appointment with the student and provide further details on how to prepare.

How long are career advising appointments, and how often can I book?
Appointments are 45 minutes each, and students may book up to four appointments per term. Students are often given take-home activities to complete in between appointments.

Will the Career Advisor match me to a part-time job or provide me a referral?
No. The Career Advisor supports students in building their professional skills by offering resources, tools, information, and recommendations.

How can I prepare for an appointment with the Career Advisor?
Students may be requested to prepare in a variety of ways, although most often, students are requested to provide a copy of their resume and cover letter in advance.

Will the Career Advisor help me find an internship or co-op for my program?
No. Career advising appointments assist by reviewing resumes and cover letters, in practicing interviewing and networking skills, and by providing resources and strategies to enhance job search outcomes.

What types of resources can the Career Advisor provide to me?
A range of resources may be recommended, such as workbooks; websites; online tools; labour market information; job boards; workshop and seminar information; referrals to community events, fairs, and programming; and more.

The Career Readiness Workshop Series consists of 15 workshops spread over three terms, offering students the opportunity to collaborate with peers on a variety of topics supporting career and professional development.

Career Readiness – Level 1
Focuses on building and practicing skills for effective job searches, such as crafting strong resumes and cover letters, job searching, and preparing for interviews.

Career Readiness – Level 2
Introduces tools and strategies for successful networking, including ways to build professional relationships both in-person and online.

Career Readiness – Level 3
Inspires students to reflect on workplace etiquette, navigating and mediating conflict, and setting goals for personal and professional success.

Students are not required to complete each level of the Career Readiness Workshop Series in order. Once enrolled in a level, students are required to attend and participate in all five sessions within that level. Upon completion of each level, students will receive a Career Readiness Badge and qualify for 10 hours of activity on their Co-Curricular Record.
