Healthy eating is the focus of UNF’s new Recipe for Success initiative

A new initiative focused on wellness gives University of Niagara Falls Canada students the tools – and ingredients – needed to eat healthy.

This month, the Student Success Office hosted its first Recipe for Success event, handing out meal kits to students that included the ingredients and recipe for Sweet Potato and Black Bean Chili.

“We wanted to ensure that students have access to healthy food, as well as access to resources telling them where they can save money while shopping in Niagara Falls and where to shop locally,” said Sam Edgar, Student Experience Manager at UNF. “Students need to be nourishing themselves as we get into the colder months.”

Response to the initiative has been great, said Edgar. The work of the Student Success Office goes beyond making sure students succeed in the classroom, it’s about creating an environment on campus where they can thrive in all aspects of their lives. Events like this aid in achieving that goal.

Annabel Obot, a graduate student in the Digital Media and Global Communications program, was interested in attending the event because she enjoys cooking. The fresh ingredients and focus on healthy eating were a big draw for her.

“I’m excited to try something new,” she said. “I’ve tried these ingredients before but not in a recipe like this.”

Master of Management student Selena Caseres echoed that sentiment, noting she’s looking forward to testing out the recipe and trying something she hasn’t had before. She was also excited about the community aspect of the event and sharing the experience with her friends.

“I’m just happy to be involved in a school activity like this,” she said, smiling.

More than 160 students picked up the meal kits.

Organizing this event was a big group effort, with the SSO working closely with Community Engagement. Staff from the Office of the Registrar, Facilities and Operations, and faculty members volunteered to help with the event.

Felicia Werner, Executive Director of Community Engagement, worked with UNF’s community partner Walmart to gather the ingredients needed for the meal.

“We are thrilled to launch impactful initiatives like Recipe for Success, which highlight the strength of our partnerships with local organizations, such as our regional Walmart in Niagara Falls. Together, we’re supporting and educating students on affordable, healthy living to help them thrive here in Niagara,” she said.

UNF will be hosting additional events on campus in the coming months focusing on the variety of ways students can nourish themselves, said Edgar. Another meal kit giveaway will take place during the Winter Term.
