The University of Niagara Falls Canada (UNF) has been designated as an official Award Centre for The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – Canada.
The award is a globally recognized program that empowers young people to achieve personal development, build resilience, and serve their communities through a variety of challenging activities.
In accordance with the official agreement, which came into effect on Oct. 28, UNF students under the age of 25 will be able to pursue the program’s Silver and Gold Awards, encouraging participants to set and achieve goals beyond the academic setting.
There are four sections to complete for each award level, centred around the four pillars of personal growth: Voluntary Service, Skills, Physical Recreation, and Adventurous Journey. Students vying for a Gold Award will also have to complete a Gold Project.
“The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award’s mission aligns perfectly with UNF’s commitment to experiential learning and leadership development,” said Cyndi McLeod, President at UNF and CEO of Global University Systems Canada. “We’re excited to see how this partnership will inspire and strengthen our students on their educational journeys.”
Engaging in the award at UNF provides students with a range of invaluable benefits:
- Personal development: Students are encouraged to push themselves beyond their comfort zones, fostering personal growth, resilience, and independence.
- Global recognition: The Award’s international reputation enhances students’ resumes, showcasing their commitment to self-improvement and community involvement to future employers and academic institutions.
- Leadership and teamwork: Through volunteering and adventurous journeys, students gain valuable experience in leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving.
- Physical and mental health: The physical recreation component promotes a healthy lifestyle, while the overall program encourages a balanced approach to mental well-being.
- Networking opportunities: Being part of a global network of Award participants enables students to build connections with peers around the world.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award was established in the United Kingdom in 1956 and introduced to Canada in 1963. With more than one-million participants, it’s one of the most prestigious youth development programs in 130 countries and territories.
Through five digitally oriented programs, UNF prepares graduates for leadership in a digital world. Located in Niagara Falls, its campus provides an interactive learning environment that unlocks student potential and advances social and economic change.
