As artificial intelligence (AI) technology continues to advance, it has prompted a significant shift in how humans communicate. Raquel Benitez Rojas, Associate Dean of the Master of Arts in Digital Media and Global Communications program at the University of Niagara Falls Canada (UNF), addresses this impact as co-editor of a new book, Revolutionizing Communication: The Role of Artificial Intelligence.
Released on Oct.22 through CRC Press, Benitez Rojas worked with co-editor Francisco-Julián Martínez-Cano, Associate Dean of the undergraduate Audiovisual Communication program at the Universidad Miguel Hernández (UMH) in Elche, Spain.
The vast topics covered by the book’s case studies range from the powerful use of deepfakes in advertising campaigns to the role of chatbots in customer service. While this is enough to grab a reader’s attention, Revolutionizing Communication also stands out because of its accessibility.
“Other books on AI are often about machine learning, software, and algorithms. They can be very technical, and readers likely require a background in AI itself or computer science to understand them,” said Benitez Rojas. “The beauty of this book is that anyone can read it, and it’s useful for people with a high level of AI knowledge and those just starting to understand it.”
Coupled with its focus areas, this makes the book an especially beneficial resource for communications professionals.
“Communications is a big field that covers journalism, advertising, film and television, social media, and many other industries. Through each case study, readers will learn the ways AI has been manipulated in the past and how that manipulation can be avoided.”
For a more extensive preview of Revolutionizing Communication, Benitez Rojas and Martínez-Cano will host an official on-campus book launch on Monday, Nov. 18, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. It will include a brief presentation of the book’s key themes, followed by a Q&A session that will allow attendees to go even deeper into these insightful subjects. Light refreshments will also be provided.
While this event is open to the public, pre-registration is required. There is an in-person limit of 80 participants. To secure your spot, register here. Those who are unable to attend in person can watch the Instagram livestream by following @unf_can.
Revolutionizing Communication: The Role of Artificial Intelligence is available for purchase through book retailers and is also available in eBook format at the UNF Library.
