Winter weather reminders for University of Niagara Falls Canada community

While winter hasn’t officially started yet, wintry weather has already made an appearance in the area.

To ensure safety during the winter months, the University of Niagara Falls Canada is reminding students, employees, and visitors to take any necessary precautions while travelling to and from campus. It’s important to stay informed about winter weather conditions and adjust travel plans accordingly.

Here are some seasonal safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Allow extra time when travelling to account for slower travel speeds during adverse road conditions and potential delays
  • Check that your vehicle is equipped for the winter
  • Make sure your phone is charged, and you have emergency contacts readily available
  • Download a mobile weather app to keep updated on road conditions
  • While driving, make sure to stay within posted speed limits, turn on your lights, and watch out for pedestrians
  • While walking, remember to move slowly, avoid texting, choose routes that are familiar and easy to navigate, and be extra mindful on steps or other terrain covered with ice, snow, or slush
  • Wear seasonally appropriate shoes or boots that are warm, waterproof, and have slip-resistant soles
  • Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back or arrive at your destination

The safety of the UNF community is our top priority and on days where it is not safe to travel, university leadership may decide to suspend or alter campus operations. Should the campus need to close, all scheduled classes and events will be cancelled, unless otherwise indicated. The decision will be announced by 6:30 a.m. and shared with the university community via email, as well as UNF’s website and social media channels.

If the campus remains open in the morning but conditions worsen throughout the day, a decision may be made to close the campus in the afternoon or alter evening classes. If that happens, the decision will be shared with the university community through the same communication channels.
